Case study

Umbo:a website for a new oyster bar in Traverse City.

Umbo is an oyster bar and restaurant on Front Street in Traverse City, from the chefs behind Marrow & Mink in Detroit. I replaced its stock template site with a custom one that matches the room: menu, story, events, visit details and a mailing list, on the restaurant’s own domain, eatumbo.com.

The problem

What Umbo needed

A new restaurant gets one first impression online, and a stock template makes a deliberate, design-led room look like every other place in town. Umbo needed a site with its own character that still answers the practical questions fast: what is on the menu, when are you open, and how do I get there.

What I built

What I built for Umbo

  1. 01

A site with the room’s personality

Type, color and motion drawn from the restaurant’s own space and Instagram, not a theme shared with a thousand other restaurants.

  2. 02

Menu, story, events and visit pages

Separate pages for each, every one quick to load on a phone, so a guest finds the answer in one tap.

  3. 03

    Restaurant structured data

Address, hours, phone and the chefs are marked up for search engines and AI assistants, so questions about Umbo get answered from the source.

  4. 04

    Mailing list signup

A signup form feeds the restaurant’s email list for menu updates, oyster drops and special dinners.

  5. 05

Moved to its own domain cleanly

Every URL, canonical tag and sitemap entry was updated in one pass when the site moved to eatumbo.com, so nothing broke in search.
